Confiserie Cafe Gmeiner in Offenburg is a spot that blends café charm with a rich tradition of patisserie and chocolate craftsmanship. Nestled on Steinstraße, this establishment operates much like a classic European coffee house with a well-rounded offering that goes beyond your average cup of coffee.

Locals and visitors often come here for a relaxed afternoon break, especially around the time when they serve their famed Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cake), a pleasant ritual in this part of Germany. The café buzzes in the afternoon, with a mix of people catching up over coffee, enjoying light lunches, or sampling one of their delicate desserts like the Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte or Apfelstrudel, which are both hearty nods to regional specialties.

What stands out is the sense of history visible in the atmosphere—the café has been welcoming guests since 1938, retaining an old-world charm that invites a slower pace. Whether you’re seated inside amongst traditional elements or grabbing a coffee on a mild day, you’ll notice how the scent of freshly made pastries and hand-crafted chocolates fills the air, reinforcing the artisanal nature of their offerings.

Beyond sweets, the menu also covers savory options like salads and light lunches, adding to its appeal as a casual midday spot. The chocolate shop section is notable too, with a variety of self-made pralines and bars that locals purchase for gifts or to enjoy later, sometimes tucked neatly into the wooden boxes provided when buying several chocolates at once.

This place suits a range of visitors:

  • Couples looking for a cozy and somewhat nostalgic setting for a quiet outing
  • Groups of friends catching up over coffee and pastries in a warm, inviting atmosphere
  • Anyone in search of quality sweets and chocolates with an emphasis on artisanal tradition

Afternoons can get busy, so it’s best visited just before or during the early afternoon to enjoy a quieter experience. While some find the afternoon tea offering a bit on the pricey side, it complements the sense that this is a place meant for savoring—whether that’s a simple milch kaffee or a more elaborate wedge of fruit tart or mirabelle cake.

In essence, Confiserie Cafe Gmeiner feels like a culinary step back into a local tradition where the quality of ingredients and a thoughtful, familiar pace of service matter most. It’s not just about grabbing a coffee, but about spending time in a setting steeped in Offenburg’s sweet and savory culture.

This is a nice and old kind of a place with traditions. Opened since 1938, the Cafe is offering delicious deserts, cakes, pies and other pattiserie. Also you can eat a salad or a lunch, have tea or coffee or wine. Good place for friends meeting or even for some couple romantic night out. Everything is fresh, good looking, good smelling. Like in old good times. Recommended. PS they have cafes also in few German towns and in Japan(!!!)

Fantastic Chocolate! Great shop in downtown Offenburg, worth a visit. Buy 5 bars and they will provide a beautiful wooden box to store chocolate in for travel. Friendly service too!

Very busy in the afternoon, this café offers pastries and confections at reasonable prices. The Afternoon Tea option, served from 2 PM, includes various treats, but in my opinion, it's a bit pricey at 23.90 euros. Despite this, the overall experience is pleasant and worth trying.

Amazing black Forrest cake and a rich dessert menu that looks very attractive and delicious. We enjoyed the black Forrest a lot and regret I did not have the time to have more of those cakes! In the centre of Offenburg.

One of the posh Cafe in Offenburg. It's above average. You 'll see a lot of locals. Place is cozy. Pastries are yummy. Although, I find it bit pricey compare to other cafe's.

I came here a few years ago and the food was so good that I had to come back. Back then, the service was really snooty, but I accepted that as just part of German confisserie service. This time, I was pleasantly surprised - the service was 100% perfection. Our waitress was friendly and smiley and we didn’t have to wait at all to be seated, to order or to pay. The woman working behind the Theke was just as nice. The staff seemed relaxed and at each with each other, something I always like to see: no one wants to see managers treating employees bad. I will keep coming back - I had the avocado toast which was beautiful to look at, filling, and tasty.
